Washington’s Animal Rescuers – No Obstacle Too Big Or Too…Foul?

The call came in on Tuesday from the Blue Plains waste treatment facility. The caller, deeply concerned, reported that 2 geese had crash landed in the waste water and were stuck and slowly sinking. WHS Animal Control Sergeant Ted Deppner and Animal Control Officer Shawn Covington got the call and rushed to the scene. Time, was not on their side.

Favorite Friday's: Favorite thing to bring to a 4th of July BBQ?

Favorite Friday's: Favorite thing to bring to a 4th of July BBQ?

What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than grilling outside at a bbq with all of your friends?

If you are not celebrating Independence Day on Sunday, July 3rd at Jackie's Restaurant in Silver Spring, Md. where they will have ample patio seating and games along with a mouthwatering menu: habanera bbq ribs, smoked beer can chicken, and squash kabobs (to name a few items off the menu), then you are definitely looking for something to bring to a family or friend's gathering pre-fireworks.

If you ask men, they always say “cold beer,” which I am not opposed to (especially the Bud heavy cans which now display the American Flag), but I love to bring a fun, patriotic gift for anyone who has a sweet tooth. My favorite thing to bring to a bbq is an American Flag cake!

Dogs Can Join Owners Outside Restaurants July 1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WUSA) -- Starting in July, you can bring your dog with you to Maryland restaurants with outdoor dining as long restaurant owners give their approval and provide written notice to the local health department.

The Dining Out Growth Act of 2011 passed the Maryland House in March and the Maryland Senate voted in April for the bill.

The new law takes effect July 1. Dogs must be on a leash, must be with an adult and cannot be left unattended.

WHS Encourages Pet Safety over July 4th Holiday Weekend

This notice comes to us from the Washington Humane Society:

The Washington Humane Society (WHS) encourages pet families to enjoy the upcoming July 4th holiday safely with their animals. Many D.C. area residents will celebrate the long weekend with family and friends, festive foods, fireworks and other outdoor activities. While pets can enjoy the celebrations, it is important to remember that some holiday activities can be potentially hazardous to their health. WHS offers the following tips to keep pet safe this Independence Day:

Patriots Final Monthly Meeting

Patriots Final Monthly Meeting

The Patriots end-of-the-year monthly meeting was hosted by Bowie State College and BDPA (formerly known as Black Data Processing Associates).  The students enjoyed walking on the campus and some of the parents had flash backs when they were in college.  The opening remarks for the conference were rendered by Dr. Daryl Stone, Assistant Professor, and Computer Science at Bowie State.  Then Susan Stewart gave a presentation about CISCO.  Mr. Jucain Butler and some of the members set up a Lego and Flight Simulation exhibits.  They also had a chance to see the Tech Challenge Robot presented by Denise Lewis from US FIRST.  Mr. Ernest Moore of the Blacks in Government Chapter from the Census Bureau joined us as we built a partnership in preparing students for jobs in the federal government.

Being A Landlord In Current Real Estate Market

(WUSA)-- A few years ago you would buy a new house and then put your current home on the market. That is no longer the case since the bottom has fallen out of the real estate market. Now homeowners are looking for good renters for their family homes before they look for a place to rent themselves.

Fiona Bonke is a perfect example. She moved to the United States from Ireland almost two years ago, at a time when the housing market had already hit rock bottom in both countries.

Bonke decided to become a renter and a landlord instead of an American homeowner. She says the move costs her a few hundred dollars a month. Her family found desirable tenants that wanted to rent the home for less than the market value. Since the family would be living across the ocean, the Bonke's decided the great tenants were worth the price deduction.
