"Safe Summer" Kick-off in Prince George's County

 

The Safe Summer program is a late night recreation initiative to promote healthy and positive lifestyles  through creative engagements and leadership training. From June 24th  to August 13th, the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation is extending operating hours from 10 pm to midnight at twenty-two community facilities to give young people, ages 12-24, free access to their favorite recreational activities.  The “Teen Fest” event attracted over 400 participants from across Prince George’s County. Sponsored in part by WPGC and CBS Radio, it featured open mic performances, video games, rock climbing, campfires, swimming and roller skating, all free of charge for teens in attendance.

Veteran Career Expo at Fed Ex Field

 

Over 300 veterans visited Fed Ex Field on Thursday, June 23rd for a free hiring event for military veterans and military spouses. Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin were among the many veteran friendly employers on site with national, regional and local opportunities.

“We have had great success stories at our career expos for transitioning veterans, or any veterans and their spouses who were connected with some really great opportunities," said RecruitMilitary’s John Lundberg.

 RecruitMilitary focuses on helping our recently returning troops, service members, veterans and their spouses with employment, entrepreneurship, and educational opportunities.

RecruitMilitary has 61 expos in 37 different cities a year. This was their 3rd time in the DC area and will be back in September at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

 Although Maryland is home to three of the richest counties in the nation (Howard, Montgomery and Calvert), 11.1 percent of households in Maryland (or 1 in 9) face a constant struggle against hunger. When schools are closed during the summer months, students who receive free or reduced-price meals throughout the school year are at risk for not receiving the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow.

WHS has committed its staff and resources to solving the overwhelming issue of pet overpopulation by offering safe, affordable, high-volume sterilizations in the D.C. metropolitan area to reduce the number of unwanted animals entering our shelters.

I asked you for your reaction to James Verone, the man who robbed a bank of one dollar to get put in jail to get medical care, and a lot of you did not approve of the way I phrased the question...especially the part where I wondered aloud if he'd considered other options such as getting a job.

Mary from Landover, Maryland said: 

"...Did you ever consider that he might be looking for a job, or that no one is going to hire some one with a growth in his chest, herniated discs in his back and a bad foot?....What we need is a better health care system so that one would not feel the need to go to such desperate measures for health care..."
