Prince George's Schools To Charge $50 Sports Fee

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- Prince George's County high school students will pay $50 to play a sport in the coming school year. The school system approved the new rule Thursday.

Any student who is a member of an "Interscholastic Athletic Team" will be required to pay the fee. It will only be charged once. Students can play as many sports in a school year as they want without paying an additional fee.

"This is the first time we have implemented an activity fee for high school athletics in our district," said superintendent Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., in a statement released by the district. "It is one of many strategies that will enable us to continue enrichment and extracurricular programs for students during these difficult economic times." The Prince George's County Public School system is facing a budget gap of more than $155 million.

Catholic School Principal Has Pink Mohawk

How many school principal's do you know that have a pink Mohawk? We know of at least one.

We went to St. Peter’s School in Waldorf, Md. Thursday, June 9th to see Principal, J.R. West, shave his hair into a Mohawk and dye it pink for a lost bet before the kids summer vacation.

At the beginning of this school year, Mr. West challenged his students to read 4,000 books instead of the 2,300 they had read the previous year. He promised if they did this, he would shave his hair into a Mohawk and paint it pink.

“In January they were only around 1900 books and I thought I was in the clear but in the spring they kicked it up a gear. They read 4,300 books, averaging 30 books per child, which is great. They read a total of 68 million words this year, and I now have a pink Mohawk,” Principal J.R. West said with a smile on his face.

Redskins Adding Party Decks To FedEx Field

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA) -- Redskins fans will soon be able to take in a game at a "party deck" at FedEx Field. However, it will mean fewer seats overall at the stadium.

The team announced on its website it is creating two "party decks" in the upper deck of FedEx Field, one at each end zone. The area will be open to people buying standing room only tickets and other fans before and after games. A posting on the Redskins' website says the decks will be ready for the start of the 2012 season.
