Maryland Cell Phone Ban Begins

Maryland residents and those residents who travel through Maryland need to know that on Friday, October 1, 2010 (this Friday) - cell phone use will become illegal while driving. The offense will be a "secondary" offense, meaning that offenders can only be cited with it if they are pulled over for another primary offense like speeding or running a red light.

Beginning on Friday, people who wish to make a call while driving MUST use a hands free device. The fine will be $40 for the first offense and $100 for subsequent violations of the law.

Texting while driving has been illegal for some time now and already carries a fine.

Maryland is following suit with several other states with cellular phone bans while in operation of a motor vehicle, but it is one of the only (if not the only) state to list the law as a "secondary" offense.

Prince George’s County will Benefit from $115 Million in Federal Stimulus to Boost Internet Speed

Prince George’s County’s elementary schools and other public buildings will soon have some of the fastest broadband Internet connections in the nation, thanks to a $115 million federal grant awarded to the One Maryland Broadband Network.

Over the next three years, the grant will enable the construction of high-speed fiber optic broadband connections to 115 County facilities, including every public elementary school and many libraries, fire stations, and other municipal facilities. The fiber network will also serve as a platform for private-sector companies to build “last-mile” connections to homes and businesses in areas of the County where residents are currently underserved.

Annual “Heat’s On – Water’s Off” Project Proving Free Heating and Plumbing Inspections to Elderly

On Saturday, September 25, 2010, the Annual “Heats On – Waters Off” project will provide preventive maintenance to heating and plumbing equipment for the elderly and the disabled who may have difficulty paying for such services.  Twenty-five homeowners that may have inefficient, faulty or hazardous equipment will be assisted in this one-day project.

Every year since 1998, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Metropolitan Washington, Plumbers Local 5 and Steamfitters Local 602 have sponsored the “Heat’s On – Water’s Off” workday in Prince George’s County.  The idea is to donate materials and expert volunteer services to help needy senior citizens make their homes ready for winter by repairing or replacing heating, plumbing and other mechanical equipment.
