Redskins: Name change not a priority

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- On the day two congress people planned to send a strongly worded letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about urging support for the Redskins name change, American University held a sports law symposium on the topic.

DC Councilmember at-large David Grosso said "The term Redskins is a racist and derogatory term... it's been defined as such in the dictionary...not just one, but four dictionaries."

Just about everybody has an opinion, like lawyer Jesse Witten, who represents native Americans in a trademark lawsuit against the team.

"Trademark action that we've brought has galvanized a lot of attention and a focal point, but what will change the name is if enough people feel the team name should be changed and team owners come to realize time is on the side of changing the team name."

President Obama Pushes Minimum Wage Boost At Costco In Lanham

LANHAM, Md -- Republicans are calling it "small ball," but the President is sure hitting it hard.

He took his State of the Union "give America a raise" message to the Costco here in Prince George's County on Wednesday.

If you ask Costco workers how they feel about their company, you will get an earful. "I love Costco," said assistant manager Lashonda Hammonds. "I can't even begin to say how good they treat us," said optician Kofi Holland. "It's awesome working here, and the wages are outstanding," said Sherri Hayes.

Costco pays it's employees well north of the minimum wage. Entry level is $11.50 and the average wage is $20. President Obama says Costco's big bag business strategy is working. And he's pushing Congress to pass a $10.10 minimum wage for everybody.

Brother and Sister Meet for the First Time on the Job

Mr. Butler is a guidance counselor at Rosa Parks Elementary. Miss Hanna is a teacher.

Butler, a Louisiana native, has worked at the Prince George's County school for six years. Hanna began teaching there last fall.

But, in what seemed like an instant, they went from Mr. Butler the guidance counselor and Miss Hanna the teacher to Victor and Amancia - brother and sister.

They have the same father. Amancia Hanna has known for all of a week. Victor Butler just found out Thursday. It's a long story, but an incredible one.

Hanna was born in Panama and grew up in North Carolina.

Her mom did not tell her much, only a name - James Butler - and that during a tour in Panama with the U.S. Navy he met Hanna's mother, whom he had a brief affair with.

"I was always looking and trying to find him but 'James Butler' is a very common name so I didn't get very far," she said.

Jay Gruden introduced as head coach of Redskins

ASHBURN, Va. (WUSA9) -- The Washington Redskins introduced Jay Gruden as the franchise's new head coach Thursday afternoon.

General Manager Bruce Allen said the team was searching for "someone who had the fire in his belly to lead" and fortunately the San Diego Chargers beat Gruden's Cincinnati Bengals, allowing the new head coach to become available.

Gruden said his relationship with Allen and and a number of remaining coaches from former coach Mike Shanahan's staff contributed to his interest in the job.

The distractions and drama surrounding Redskins Park this season are something Gruden said he was aware of but did not follow closely.

"All the players want to forget about last year and move forward," Gruden said.

"We let the past be the past and move forward and try to build a trust factor from day one between the coaches, players and ownership," Gruden said later in an interview with WUSA9.

Police investigate homicide in Landover

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police are investigating a homicide in Landover.

It happened on Jan. 8 at about 10:50 a.m., when officers were called to the 2500 block of 50th Avenue in Landover, Md. for a welfare check, police say. When they arrived, officers found an adult male suffering from upper body trauma inside a camping trailer.

The victim, identified as 59-year-old Isaiah Williams of no fixed address, was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.

Preliminary investigation reveals the victim had recently been staying in the trailer. Detectives are working to identify a suspect and motive in the case.

Joe Reedy on Redskins hire Jay Gruden

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Washington Redskins have hired Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden as their next head coach.

Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy, who has been covering the Bengals for five seasons, says Jay is a little more laid back then his brother Jon Gruden but still intense.

Reedy calls Gruden a great offensive mind, and says he was unofficially the offensive coordinator when Tampa Bay won the Super Bowl in 2002, calling the plays alongside his brother Jon.

Gruden knows how to deal with and acquire personnel, according to Reedy, who cited his experiencing in the UFL and the Arena League.
