Volunteer at the 8th Annual Celebration of Gorgeous Prince George's County

Prince George’s County Executive Jack B. Johnson will host the 8th annual Celebration of Gorgeous Prince George’s County from 8 a.m. to noon on October 16, 2010 with street litter pickup activity, and cleanup and pruning of existing Gorgeous Prince George’s Day sites throughout the county.  A volunteer celebration picnic will take place at the Historic Bladensburg Waterfront Park from noon to 3 p.m.

 

“For the past eight years, my administration has made building and maintaining livable communities one of its most important goals,” says Johnson.  “I am proud to say that celebrating the beauty of Gorgeous Prince George’s County has become a tradition and it continues to make our county a great place to live, work and play.”

 

DC Pro Sports Teams Join Forces With Coca-Cola to Battle Childhood Obesity

The Coca-Cola Company, Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, Washington Nationals, Washington Redskins and Washington Wizards joined forces at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, September 28 to announce a unique partnership aimed at educating local area youth about the importance of physical activity and a balanced diet. The collective influence of these high profile partners is expected to amplify the need to educate and engage area youth about eating right and keeping fit. These are shared goals for Washington’s professional sports teams and Coca-Cola, giving youth an exciting opportunity to connect with local icons and teaching them how to “play like pros and eat like pros.”  The D.C.-area alliance, which is an extension of Coca-Cola’s numerous Live Positively programs, will serve as a pilot program for future partnerships between Coca-Cola and professional sports teams throughout the country.

County Executive Challenges Mayor of Arlington, TX Prior to Redskins-Cowboys Game

Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson is offering a friendly challenge to Mayor Robert Cluck of Arlington, Texas to kick off the 2010 Redskins Week activities.  The two will talk via conference call on the field at FedEx Field this morning.

Redskins Week is launched via OFFICIAL PROCLAMATIONS in Prince George’s County, Md., Washington, D.C., and Loudoun County, Va., as well as Fairfax County, VA and Montgomery County, MD. 

Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Loudoun County Chairman Scott K. York will hold separate press conferences at 10 a.m. at FedExField, 1:30 pm at Powell Elementary School in DC, and at the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Meeting in Leesburg at 6:30 p.m. to announce the official proclamations, and each will issue a friendly wager on the outcome of the game with their counterparts in Texas.

Giant Food of Landover and the Baltimore Ravens Team Up

Talk about teamwork! Giant Food and the Baltimore Ravens have come together for a magnificent cause.

The Ravens named Giant Food their official supermarket partner as the two organizations begin a season-long campaign giving back to the Maryland Food Bank.

Giant will support the team’s annual “Ravens Family Food Drive” at Baltimore-area stores from November 7 to November 28; leading up to the November 28 Giant Food Game Day Sponsorship at M&T Bank Stadium when the Ravens host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

The Ravens and Giant hope to donate more than 40,000 pounds of non-perishable food items to the Maryland Food Bank, but that's not all: Giant and the Ravens will also team up to support community events including breast cancer awareness and prevention efforts in the month of October.

D.C. Divas Heading to International Women’s World Championship in Football

The Landover, Md. based professional women’s football team, the D.C. Divas, have announced that three of their players were selected to play in America’s first women’s national football team.

The national team is set to travel to Stockholm, Sweden for the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women’s World Championship.

Representing the Divas on the 2010 U.S. club are: Okiima Pickett (RB); Michelle Riddle (OL); and Donna Wilkinson (TE/WR).

 

Prince George's County Track Club Wins Big at AAU Jr. Olympics

Track Express Track Club (TETC), Prince George County's finest track club has been competing in the AAU Jr. Olympics track meets for over 15 years, breaking records and winning a number of gold medals year after year.

This year, it is no different in Norfolk, VA, with member, Rashad Manning breaking the record in the Javelin Throw for the youth boys. He also won the gold in the Discus and silver in the Shot put.
