Meet the Rabkin Behind the Rubik

Ashby Ponds resident Dick Rabkin worked as a patent attorney who helped bring the Rubik’s Cube to America
 

(ASHBURN, VIRGINIA) – Dick Rabkin spent over 15 years working as a patent and trademark attorney for Ideal Toy Company, which manufactured and distributed toys, dolls, and games beginning with the Teddy Bear in the early 1900s.  “I had toys and games all over my office,” said Rabkin.  The Ideal Company’s largest competitors were Hasbro and Mattel before the company was dissolved in 1985 a few years after being purchased by CBS.  Some notable toys produced by the Ideal Toy Company include Mr. Machine, Chrissy, Betsy Wetsy, the Magic 8-Ball, and the Rubik’s Cube.

Takoma Park native, and former NBA All-Star, Steve Francis, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and community celebration for the newly renovated Takoma-Piney Branch Local Park on Sunday, June 3rd at 1 p.m.

The Steve Francis Foundation donated $70,000 for improvements to the park including a renovated basketball court featuring a color-coated surface and six new basketball hoops, two new playgrounds, a new skateboard park, and a new picnic pavilion.

Montgomery Parks Director, Mary Bradford, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, and the City of Takoma Park’s Mayor, Bruce Williams will be in attendance.

Greenspring retirement community has planned several activities for National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in May including a yoga alignment clinic and a nature walk near Accotink Creek, which runs adjacent to Greenspring’s campus.  Greenspring residents are known stewards of campaigns promoting a healthier lifestyle, as is evident through their partnership with the National Institute on Aging’s Go4Life® campaign.  Greenspring held the first ever Go4Life® campaign event at the campus in Springfield in November 2011.

Mommy Bootcamp offers classes in four northern Virginia locations including Vienna, Chantilly, Sterling, and their newest headquarters in Ashburn.

Each workout is led by two certified instructors specializing in aggressive cardio and strength training as well as options for moms just getting back to the gym without the need for a babysitter.

“At Mommy Bootcamp we understand that childcare costs can prevent mothers from hitting the gym. Babies and toddlers are welcome at all of our classes, allowing mothers to focus on getting their body back, instead of worrying about their kids,” said owner Kathy Corbey.
