Pack Light, Pack Right While Traveling by Air This Fall

Fall is a time when millions of people around the country begin to make their travel plans. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the busiest travel times of the year are just around the corner, which include Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. There are some great reasons why packing light will help make your trip easier and more enjoyable. And the good news is that it’s not difficult to do, either.

“If you want to pack right when you travel then you really need to focus on packing light,” explains Tina Aldatz, chief executive officer of Savvy Travelers. “There’s much less hassle and stress when you pack light and stick to the basics. You can put your focus on your travel, rather than having all of your attention go to dragging around way too much luggage.”

Route 50 reopened in Landover after brush fires

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- A large section of Route 50 was closed in Landover while firefighters battled a series of brush fires.

According to a spokesperson for Prince George's County fire, the fires have been extinguished. 

Route 50 was closed in the area of Landover Road while firefighters battled the fire. 

At one point, the fires extended all the way from Landover Road to Kenilworth Avenue.

METRO SCHOOL of the ARTS ACADEMY AUDITIONS, SUN., MAR. 1; for 2015-2016 School Year

METRO SCHOOL of the ARTS ACADEMY AUDITIONS, SUN., MAR. 1; for 2015-2016 School Year

Students interested in attending the Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria and Lorton, Va. can audition on Sun., Mar. 1 at MSA Lorton Campus at 9601 Ox Road. Auditions are required as part of the 2015-2016 academy registration. The MSA Academy audition is for performing arts students from 6th grade to 12th grade. Students should call 703-339-0444 ext.3 or visit www.metropolitanarts.org to register for an audition time. 

The audition process will give prospective students an opportunity to demonstrate his or her skills in dance, music and theater for the chairs of the respective arts departments.  Applicants must attend a live audition if they live within three geographical states of MSA.  Prospective students living beyond the three-state radius may submit a DVD audition. 

Man linked to 4 MD robberies arrested

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County Police Department arrested a man who police say may be linked to four robberies in Landover this year.

Police arrested Daquan Douglas, 27, of Landover in connection with the robberies that happened between January 15 and February 2.

In each incident, the victims were walking in the area of Garrett Morgan Boulevard between 6 and 7 p.m. The investigation shows that the suspect went up to the victims, pulled out a weapon and demanded their property. Nobody was hurt in any of the incidents, authorities said.


PG County investigate fatal pedestrian crash in Landover

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Prince George's County Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that happened in Landover, Md. on Friday morning.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Landover Road and Matthew Henson Avenue, authorities said. A woman was found on the road suffering from critical injuries. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Investigation shows that the woman was crossing Landover Road when she was hit by a car. The woman was not inside the crosswalk at the time of the accident, authorities said.

Police said the driver involved did stay on the scene of the accident.

The victim's name has not been released yet.

Holiday party supports 10 kids who lost their mothers

LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA 9) -- Sisters 4 Sisters hosted a holiday party celebrating the 10 children who lost theirs mothers in the fatal Prince George's County car accident.

The party was part of the Sister 4 Sisters "Hope for the Holidays: A Mother's Love" campaign that helps support children during the holidays.

Prince George's fire spokesperson Mark Brady said the October accident was "one of the worst" crashes in 40 years, killing two children and three adults.
